The PCM sends full open and full closed commands and checks actual against commanded position. The valve actuators are calibrated at every Key-ON event. An internal Hall Effect sensor counts the pulses and determines valve position. The Active Exhaust Valve actuators move the butterfly valves to the commanded position. The PCM sends a position command to the Active Exhaust Valve actuators based on engine torque, rpm and vehicle speed. The PCM can identify each actuator location by this unique ID. The Active Exhaust Valve actuator 1 (left) and Active Exhaust Valve actuator 2 (right) each has a unique part number/internal ID. The Active Exhaust Valve actuators communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) over a LIN Bus circuit. The spring is used to help reduce heat from transferring between the mechanical butterfly valves and the actuators. They are connected to the mechanical valves through a transmission spring. Mounted to each of these is a smart electric actuator which has a power, ground and bus feedback wire. First is the mechanical butterfly valves that are welded into the exhaust pipe on each bank. (We hot rodders didn't ask for this!) The Active Exhaust Valves consist of two parts. The purpose of the Active Exhaust Valves are to reduce exhaust noise in the big 6.2 and 6.4L Hemis in order to meet and pass EPA noise regulations. So, does this mean the valves are not open all the time in Track mode or am I testing it incorrectly? That said, I've toggled between different drive modes while driving and I'm pretty sure the exhaust doesn't get louder (unless I get on it, of course). Unless they're actually open and I can't tell because the car's RPM's have settled in after the cold start. I'm just not so sure about Track mode causing them to be open all the time. I realize they'll open under throttle and will open sooner in Sport and Track mode. In fact, the volume doesn't change at all. The exhaust does not get louder (like the cold start volume). While it's still running in the garage, I put the car in Track modeĤ. You can tell when they close because the car really quiets down - only takes about 10-15 secondsģ.
